A petition advocating for legal recognition of intended parents from birth has garnered over 110,000 signatures, leading to a parliamentary debate in the UK. This initiative stems from the experiences of Adam Frisby and Jamie Corbett, who welcomed their daughter via surrogacy in the United States.

The current UK law designates the surrogate as the legal mother, compelling intended parents to navigate a complicated court process to secure their parental rights. Adam Frisby expressed frustration with this legal framework, stating, “When our daughter was born through surrogacy, we became dads the moment we held her. But under current law, the surrogate is automatically recognised as the legal mother.”

The Law Commission had previously recommended reforms to surrogacy laws three years ago, suggesting that intended parents should be recognized from birth. However, no government action has been taken since that recommendation was made.

Meanwhile, on another front in Hong Kong, survivors of the Tai Po fire have also initiated a petition. They collected 247 handwritten signatures requesting a homeowners’ meeting concerning long-term resettlement plans following the tragic incident that occurred on November 26, 2025, which claimed 168 lives.

This petition was delivered to Hop On Management on April 29, 2026. Jason Kong, representing the survivors, noted that they had gathered signatures from around 12 percent of all households at Wang Fuk Court—exceeding the required threshold of 5 percent needed to call a general meeting.

As these petitions unfold in both regions, it remains unclear how quickly legislative changes could occur regarding surrogacy laws in the UK or what resolutions will emerge for Tai Po fire survivors. Sarah Dodds remarked on the significance of discussions surrounding UK surrogacy laws: “It’s exciting to see UK surrogacy laws being discussed and debated at the highest level.”

The gradual increase of the state pension age to 67 is set to significantly impact millions of workers approaching retirement, with financial implications for both individuals and the Treasury. This change will begin on May 5, 2026, and will rise incrementally over the next two years.

Those born between April 6 and May 5, 1960, are the first cohort affected by this shift. The Treasury anticipates that the adjustment will save approximately £10 billion annually by 2030. Currently, recipients of the new flat-rate state pension receive £241.30 per week, totaling £12,547.60 annually.

This increase reflects a trend towards raising the pension age due to rising life expectancy. Many younger workers are expected to remain in employment into their seventies, which means they may have to wait longer for their pensions. Charities have raised concerns that this change could disproportionately affect areas with lower healthy life expectancy.

Key statistics:

The full New State Pension is now worth £12,547 annually.

The maximum Basic State Pension stands at £9,614.

Individuals typically need 35 years of national insurance contributions to qualify for the full state pension.

Pension Credit could provide an additional £4,300 in financial help this year for eligible pensioners. However, over 700,000 people are estimated to be eligible for Pension Credit but are not currently claiming it.

The impact of this policy change has prompted various reactions. Peter Bradbury expressed frustration about needing to adjust his work plans due to the increased pension age. Laurence O’Brien noted that those most affected often lack the means to adapt through continued work or savings withdrawal.

Lily Megson-Harvey emphasized that while the state pension age rising may feel like a shifting goalpost, individuals still have control over their retirement planning. As this transition unfolds, many will need to reassess their strategies for retirement savings and income.

The upcoming Tesco equal pay tribunal could have significant implications for equal pay claims in the retail sector, impacting over 60,000 workers.

The post Tesco equal pay tribunal appeared first on News-UK.

The Tesco equal pay tribunal is set to begin on May 1, 2026, in Reading, UK, with the potential to reshape equal pay claims across the retail sector. The case involves over 60,000 shop workers alleging that Tesco pays them less than their counterparts in distribution centers, creating a significant pay disparity.

Before this development, there was a general expectation that Tesco would maintain its current wage structure. However, the claimants argue that the supermarket chain has control over how pay is set across its business and should be held accountable for any inequities.

The immediate numbers are striking: claimants seek six years of back pay covering the period from 2012 to 2018. This could result in an estimated overall value of £4 billion, as calculated by law firm Leigh Day. Tesco’s defense hinges on claims that market conditions and operational needs justify the wage differences.

Experts weigh in on the implications of this case. Paula Lee, representing the claimants, stated, “These hearings go to the heart of why Tesco is paying its store workers less than their colleagues in distribution.” She emphasized that there is no lawful justification for continuing to underpay predominantly female store workers for work of equal value.

Separately, Tesco has argued that equalizing pay could inflict serious damage on its operations and ignores economic realities. The company asserts that the gap in pay was determined by market conditions rather than discriminatory practices.

On another front, if ruling goes against Tesco, it may face industrial action among warehouse staff due to fears of wage adjustments impacting their compensation. The potential repercussions extend beyond just financial costs; they may also affect employee morale and operational stability.

The next steps are crucial as a judgment is expected later this year. This case not only impacts Tesco but could also set a precedent for other retailers grappling with similar issues related to gender pay gaps and employment practices.

The Home Office has significantly increased the value and duration of its passport production contract, responding to rising demand for travel documents.

The Home Office has announced a substantial increase in the value of its passport production contract, raising it to £576 million. This change reflects the growing demand for passport services, as the agency issues approximately eight million passports annually.

The current contract with Thales began in April 2018 and was originally set to expire in September 2027. However, the Home Office has extended this new contract’s duration to twelve years, now slated to end on September 30, 2029.

In a related move, the Home Office postponed the start date of this contract from September 2027 to August 2028. This adjustment allows for better preparation as the agency adapts to evolving needs in passport production.

As part of the contract update, the Home Office will allocate £5.88 million to IBM for essential software licenses and support services. The required software is proprietary and integrated into existing systems, indicating a reliance on established technology.

Meanwhile, a photographic studio founded by Dave Sharkey and his wife Ann in London in 1953 gained fame for capturing celebrity passport photos. The studio became known for producing prints that were ‘ready in 10 minutes,’ catering to high-profile clients.

This studio’s legacy includes notable figures such as Kate Winslet, who had a passport photo taken for her character in the film Hideous Kinky. Other celebrities like Muhammad Ali, Bianca Jagger, Mick Jagger, David Hockney, and Tilda Swinton have also visited the studio.

As travel resumes post-pandemic, the Home Office’s decision to enhance its passport production capabilities is crucial. The agency aims to meet increasing demands while ensuring that biometric systems are up-to-date and efficient.

The new supplier may also need to explore digital travel credentials as part of this extended contract. This shift could further modernize how travel documents are issued and verified.

An inquiry into the Nottingham killings raises alarming questions about mental health service protocols. Valdo Calocane, a diagnosed schizophrenic, was discharged before the attacks.

The post The nottingham inquiry appeared first on News-UK.

On June 13, 2023, in Nottingham, UK, Valdo Calocane committed a shocking act of violence, stabbing to death three individuals: Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar, both aged 19, and Ian Coates, aged 65. An inquiry into this tragedy has revealed significant lapses in mental health care that raise serious concerns for public safety.

Calocane had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and was under the care of Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust for two years prior to his discharge. However, he was released back to his GP months before the killings due to healthcare workers’ inability to locate him for treatment.

The timeline of events leading up to the discharge is troubling. Calocane’s last engagement with the Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) team occurred by phone on July 16, 2022. Following that interaction, he was not seen again for nine months.

Emma Robinson, a team leader at the trust, expressed her frustrations during the inquiry. “We did consider that [discharging him], but we felt that within the time of decision we had no holding powers; we couldn’t work with him,” she explained. This sentiment underscores the challenges faced by mental health services when patients become disengaged.

Robinson further elaborated on her team’s decision-making process regarding Calocane’s discharge. “It feels safer to have somebody discharged back to the queue of the GP than open to a secondary service when we can’t engage them,” she stated.

A consultant psychiatrist had previously warned that Calocane could pose a danger if not properly monitored. This warning raises critical questions about how such assessments are managed within mental health services.

The inquiry has highlighted systemic issues within the Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust regarding their protocols for managing patients with severe mental illnesses like paranoid schizophrenia. The inability to maintain contact with Calocane reflects broader issues affecting patient engagement and public safety.

As investigations continue, many are left questioning how similar tragedies can be prevented in the future. The implications of this case extend beyond Nottingham, prompting discussions about mental health policies nationwide.

The findings from this inquiry will likely influence future practices within mental health services across the UK as they strive to balance patient care with community safety responsibilities.

Romania's pro-European government has collapsed following a no-confidence vote, raising concerns in Brussels about the new political landscape.

Romania’s pro-European government collapsed on May 5, 2026, after losing a no-confidence vote in parliament. The motion received overwhelming support, with 281 votes in favor from the 464-seat assembly, marking a significant shift in the country’s political landscape.

The no-confidence motion was initiated by an unlikely coalition of the Social Democrats (PSD) and the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR). This alliance has raised alarm bells in Brussels as it indicates a potential shift away from pro-European policies.

The AUR has gained substantial popularity, surpassing the PSD as the most favored party in recent polls, boasting around 37% support. This political turmoil comes on the heels of Romania facing a budget deficit of nearly 8%, the highest within the European Union.

The current Prime Minister, Ilie Bolojan, who leads the National Liberal Party (PNL), criticized the censure motion as “false, cynical and artificial.” He emphasized that it lacked any viable alternatives to address Romania’s pressing issues.

Key developments:

The next parliamentary election is scheduled for 2028.

The minority government will likely remain in an interim capacity until a new prime minister is appointed.

Nicușor Dan is expected to consult with party leaders to explore options for forming a new coalition government.

Sorin Grindeanu from PSD remarked, “There is life after the no-confidence vote,” indicating that alternative paths may be pursued despite the current upheaval. Meanwhile, Cătălin Predoiu from PNL stated that they must keep their options open amid these changes.

No timeline has been shared regarding when parliament will approve a nominee for prime minister. The uncertainty surrounding this transition highlights the challenges Romania faces as it navigates its political future.

Despite a potential reunion for their children, Prince William remains firmly opposed to reconciling with Prince Harry, highlighting ongoing tensions within the royal family. Reports indicate that while William has agreed for his children to meet Harry’s kids, he is deeply uncomfortable with direct reconciliation.

The rift between the brothers traces back to Harry’s departure from royal duties in January 2020. This decision has led to a significant estrangement, and William has allegedly resisted any reunion efforts involving Harry and Meghan Markle. An insider noted, “It’s become a huge battle because William carries enormous influence behind the scenes.”

King Charles III is reportedly keen on ensuring that family ties remain intact for the next generation. However, William’s stance suggests he views Harry’s actions as incompatible with royal loyalty and discretion. He has a non-negotiable issue regarding his brother that he refuses to compromise on.

The brothers have not spoken since Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in September 2022. This prolonged silence underscores the depth of their estrangement. Meanwhile, Harry has expressed reluctance to bring his children to the U.K. without adequate protection, complicating any potential reunions.

William is also reportedly blocking an invite for Harry and his family to Sandringham, further illustrating his resistance to reconciliation. As an insider mentioned, “Charles is convinced William is meddling and quietly working against him.” This internal conflict within the monarchy adds another layer of complexity to their relationship.

The planned meeting between the cousins is expected to take place in the U.K. this summer, yet uncertainties surround whether it will actually happen. The dynamics of this family situation continue to evolve as public statements and private sentiments clash.

Dubai’s Financial Audit Authority (FAA) recently completed its first internal audit quality review for the Community Development Authority (CDA), achieving a rating of ‘Generally Conforms’ with global internal audit standards. This assessment is crucial for enhancing governance and oversight practices across the UAE.

The external assessment, conducted as part of FAA’s consulting services, aims to bolster governance, risk management, compliance, and internal control. Faisal Kazim, director of FAA’s Consulting & Business Excellence Department, emphasized the importance of independent quality assurance assessments to strengthen these frameworks.

Talal Al Hashmi, CDA’s internal audit and risk management director, remarked that this external evaluation is a valuable addition to their continuous development journey. The review is mandated at least once every five years according to international standards.

Meanwhile, escalating tensions in the region have raised concerns about potential military actions. The UAE’s oil export facilities have been targeted by Iran amid rising hostilities. Observers expect US and Israeli strikes on Iran within the next 24 hours, contributing to uncertainty in the area.

In response to these threats, US airforce jets have been scrambled over UAE airspace and other Gulf states to conduct combat air patrols. This military readiness reflects heightened concerns regarding security in light of recent events.

As a result of these developments, Brent oil prices surged due to market worries about the escalating conflict. Analysts note that traders are closely monitoring the situation as it unfolds.

Actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has made a stunning debut in the Tamil Nadu elections, leading in a significant number of constituencies and challenging the dominance of traditional parties. As of the latest trends, TVK is leading in 110 of the 234 constituencies.

The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) alliance is ahead in 61 seats, while the AIADMK-led alliance follows with leads in 62 constituencies. This shift marks a significant change in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, breaking the long-standing duopoly of Dravidian parties.

Vote Share Breakdown:

TVK secured 34.72 percent of the vote share, approximately 1.18 crore votes.

The DMK polled around 24 percent, translating to about 84 lakh votes.

The AIADMK garnered about 21 percent of the vote share, or roughly 73.93 lakh votes.

Vijay contested from two constituencies—Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East—and was leading in both. In Tiruchirappalli East, he held a margin of 6,499 votes at the end of the first round of counting. TVK’s performance cut across urban centers and rural constituencies, including traditional DMK strongholds.

Celebrations erupted outside TVK’s headquarters in Chennai as party workers rejoiced over their success. Actor Sivakarthikeyan congratulated Vijay, stating, “Congratulations to Vijay sir for achieving such a big victory and impact in his first election.”

K Annamalai expressed his satisfaction with the electoral outcome, saying, “I am happy to see that in my land, people have risen in one voice and spoken – no to buying of votes, no to dynastic politics, and yes to a generational shift in politics.” The voter turnout for this election reached an impressive 85.1 percent, marking the highest in the state’s history.

The TVK had promised monthly assistance of Rs.2,500 for women under 60 years of age—excluding beneficiaries of similar existing schemes—contributing to their appeal among voters. This new party’s emergence signals a potential reshaping of Tamil Nadu’s political dynamics moving forward.

A protest by Sasha Swan, an OnlyFans model, disrupted the World Snooker Championship final on May 3, 2026, at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. The incident raised significant questions regarding the BBC’s licence fee and its implications for public broadcasting.

During the high-stakes match between Shaun Murphy and Wu Yize, Swan shouted, ‘who f—ing pays their TV licence anyway’ before jumping over a barrier. This unexpected outburst led to her ejection from the venue and briefly halted the game.

Wu Yize had been leading the match with a score of 10-7 after two sessions when the protest occurred. The final was being broadcast live on BBC One, adding to the visibility of the disruption. John Parrott, a commentator at the event, reassured viewers shortly after, stating, ‘Sorry for that disturbance, it’s all sorted.’

The protest is part of a broader trend of disruptions throughout this year’s World Snooker Championships. Earlier in the tournament, another spectator was ejected during a semi-final for shouting about unrelated topics, indicating a growing pattern of protests at significant sporting events.

Key details:

The protest occurred during a crucial moment in the championship final.

Sasha Swan’s actions are linked to ongoing debates about public funding for broadcasting services.

This incident follows previous protests at snooker finals, including one involving Just Stop Oil activists in 2024.

As tensions continue regarding media funding and public service broadcasting, further developments may arise. Fans and commentators alike are left pondering how these protests might influence future events in sports and media policy.
