The DVLA’s backlog in processing medical driving license applications has led to significant delays, prompting calls for urgent reforms. “I am sorry to all those who have been impacted by the delays,” stated Simon Lightwood, highlighting the frustrations faced by many applicants.

As of February 2026, processing times for medical licenses exceeded 14 weeks, causing a wave of complaints from individuals awaiting their renewals. The DVLA has faced challenges due to an increase in both the number and complexity of medical applications.

To address these issues, the DVLA has introduced new technology aimed at improving the efficiency of driving license applications that require medical checks. In April 2026, the average time for a medical case licensing decision fell to 56.6 working days, a promising development amid ongoing challenges.

Key statistics:

The DVLA processed 498,780 contacts through its chatbot without human intervention in FY26.

A total of 964,576 queries were handled via the webchat service during the same period.

The agency hired 43 additional medical caseworkers to help tackle the backlog.

Vikki Slade pointed out that there is a stark contrast between processing times for standard licenses and those requiring medical renewals. She remarked, “The DVLA is stuck in manual whilst the rest of us are on automatic,” emphasizing the need for modernization within the agency.

The DVLA’s online portal for reporting new medical conditions opened on March 31, 2026, which aims to streamline submissions and improve response times. Furthermore, inquiries via webchat are handled around 90 seconds quicker than those via telephone, showcasing the advantages of digital services.

A spokesperson from the DVLA acknowledged that they are currently experiencing exceptionally high demand for applications from customers with medical conditions. This surge has regrettably impacted some processing times.
