According to the Department for Transport, electric vehicle registrations have increased by 15% compared to last year. March 2026 recorded the highest demand ever for EVs, indicating rapid growth in the market.

The Electric Car Grant has played a crucial role in this growth, assisting over 100,000 drivers save up to £3750 on new electric vehicles. Ginny Buckley, CEO of Electrifying.com, noted that government initiatives like this grant have made it easier for many drivers to switch to electric.

Meanwhile, the cost of electric cars has become more competitive. They are now cheaper to buy than petrol models for the first time. Drivers can also save up to £1,400 annually on running costs compared to traditional petrol vehicles.

On another front, the government is investing £7.5 billion to support businesses transitioning to electric vehicles. Additionally, £600 million will be allocated to enhance charging infrastructure, which currently includes 119,000 chargers, twice the number of petrol pumps in the UK.

Separately, demand for used electric vehicles surged by 177% year-on-year in March 2026, as reported by Octopus Electric Vehicles. The Jaecoo 7 SUV emerged as the most popular lease car so far this year.

Tanya Sinclair, CEO of Electric Vehicles UK, emphasized that the growth in EV registrations demonstrates that when the market offers choice and value, consumers will respond positively. However, Jarrod Birch from ChargeUK cautioned that it is essential for the government to maintain momentum in supporting EV sales rather than weakening regulations.
