Mostyn McKenzie, a beloved shoe chain, has permanently closed its last store in Perth after 60 years on the high street due to rising costs and changing shopping habits.

The store confirmed that May 2, 2026, marked its final day of in-store business. Mostyn McKenzie, founded in 1966, has struggled to recover from the impacts of Covid and changing consumer preferences.

Graeme McKenzie, a representative of the chain, stated, “High street retail has become increasingly difficult.” He elaborated that costs have risen significantly while footfall in Perth has dropped considerably.

Previously, Mostyn McKenzie operated branches across the UK, including locations in Aberdeen, Broughty Ferry, and Edinburgh. The flagship store in Aberdeen closed in 2023 as part of a broader trend affecting many high street retailers.

In response to the closure, Mostyn McKenzie launched a clearance sale offering up to 70% off online stock. This move aims to help clear remaining inventory as the company winds down operations.

The shoe retailer specialized in comfort and quality, featuring brands like Gabor, Rieker, and Josef Seibel. However, rising operational costs and diminished customer traffic have ultimately led to its demise.

The future of high street retail remains uncertain as more businesses face similar challenges. Graeme McKenzie noted that many retailers are grappling with increased expenses while adapting to new shopping habits shaped by recent events.
