The Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre indicated that the new threat level suggests a terrorist attack is highly likely within the next six months. Previously, the threat was assessed as merely likely when it was classified as substantial.

This shift in classification follows a troubling trend of increasing threats from both Islamist and Extreme Right Wing groups. Shabana Mahmood stated, “Today, the national threat level has increased to ‘severe’, which means a terrorist attack is considered highly likely.” She acknowledged the heightened concern among the Jewish community, stating, “I know this will be a source of concern to many, particularly amongst our Jewish community, who have suffered so much.”

In response to these rising threats, the government announced an additional £25 million in funding aimed at enhancing security for Jewish communities. This brings the total funding for community protection this year to an unprecedented £58 million.

Separately, two Jewish men were attacked in Golders Green, leading authorities to declare a terrorism incident. Keir Starmer emphasized the importance of this funding by stating that it will support increased police patrols and security measures designed to keep Jewish communities safer.
