For the first time, all Royal Navy recruits will undergo a unified training program at HMS Raleigh, starting on June 1, 2026. This new approach includes a 10-week Initial Naval Training course designed to enhance operational effectiveness.

The redesigned training system creates a shared starting point for both Officers and Ratings, which had previously followed separate pathways. After completing the initial training at HMS Raleigh, officers will proceed to a revamped 14-week commissioning course at the Britannia Royal Naval College.

Key changes in the training program:

All recruits will complete a 10-week Initial Naval Training course at HMS Raleigh.

Officers will transition to a redesigned 14-week commissioning course at Britannia Royal Naval College.

The new system aims to eliminate duplication across the training pipeline.

This shift aligns with the First Sea Lord’s Warfighting Ready by 2029 plan, which emphasizes modernizing Royal Navy training to prepare leaders for contemporary challenges. Rear Admiral Andrew Rose noted that the Royal Navy has always adapted to maintain an advantage over emerging threats.

Captain Andrew Bray added that this modernized system strengthens their ability to generate capable and mission-ready leaders. The changes come without any redundancies, ensuring that existing staff remain in place.

The first cohort of officer cadets is set to begin this new initial training phase on June 1, 2026. This initiative marks a significant evolution in how the Royal Navy prepares its personnel for future operations.
