CAFRE horticulture students completed a study tour to France, gaining insights into innovative practices in horticulture from April 20 to April 28, 2026. The tour focused on sustainability and organic farming, featuring visits to key sites in Nantes and Angers.

Key visits included:

Pépinières Lepage, a large-scale ornamental and bulb producer in Nantes that produces around 3 million perennials and grasses annually.

Vincent Favreau’s organic market gardening operation in Saumur, where he has been supplying seasonal vegetable boxes for the past 20 years.

Students also explored L’Arboretum Gaston Allard, which showcases approximately 1,000 mature trees from an 18th-century collection. This experience allowed them to witness firsthand various aspects of sustainable agriculture and amenity management.

Meanwhile, significant protests are planned across France on May 1, a public holiday that has been observed since 1947. The CGT union has called for demonstrations against the high cost of living.

Expected participation includes:

Between 110,000 and 160,000 people expected to join the marches nationwide. and A total of 320 demonstrations scheduled to take place in major towns and cities across the country.

The protests aim to advocate for workers’ rights and better remuneration amidst rising living costs. As the Tour de France approaches its Stage 1 event in the Scottish Borders on July 2, 2027, these demonstrations highlight ongoing social issues within the country.

Labour Day rallies are being held globally on May 1, 2026, as workers gather to protest against rising energy prices while calling for solidarity amidst ongoing economic concerns. Trade unions are at the forefront, advocating for the protection of workers’ rights during this challenging time.

In Argentina, thousands of workers protested against President Javier Milei’s overhaul of labour protections, which many believe threatens their rights. This comes as trade union organisations represented by the European Trade Union Confederation express that over 93 unions are demanding action against soaring costs.

Meanwhile, in Gaza, the situation is dire as Palestinian workers have cancelled their May Day events due to an escalating economic crisis exacerbated by ongoing conflict. Reports indicate that approximately 550,000 workers across Gaza and the West Bank currently have no income.

On another front, the historical significance of International Workers’ Day cannot be overlooked. Established in the late 19th century, this day commemorates the struggles of workers worldwide. The Haymarket Affair in 1886 marked a pivotal moment in this movement, leading to the formal recognition of May 1 as a day dedicated to workers’ rights.

Across different regions, voices from trade unions resonate with urgency. Josua Mata from the Philippines stated, “Every Filipino worker now is aware that the situation here is deeply connected to the global crisis.” Renato Reyes echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that “there will be a louder call for higher wages and economic relief because of the unprecedented spikes in fuel prices.”

The European Trade Union Confederation also voiced strong opposition to geopolitical tensions affecting working people: “Working people refuse to pay the price for Donald Trump’s war in the Middle East.” Such statements underline a growing sentiment among workers globally that they should not bear the brunt of rising costs driven by external conflicts.

The Durham Miners’ Gala in North East England continues to celebrate workers’ struggles, showcasing local resilience amid broader economic challenges. As Labour Day rallies unfold worldwide, they serve as a reminder of both historical struggles and current realities faced by workers everywhere.

The Leeds May Day march showcased powerful voices advocating for workers' rights, reflecting ongoing challenges to public services globally.

“May Day is a vivid reminder that working-class politics is not a spectator sport,” stated a key participant during the Leeds May Day march. This event, organized by Leeds TUC in collaboration with Stand Up To Racism, took place against a backdrop of increasing global challenges to public services.

The Leeds May Day march featured prominent speakers such as Paul Novak, Jane Aitchison, and Richard Burgon MP, who addressed the crowd about the importance of advocating for workers’ rights. The event included traditional elements like maypole dancing and the presence of May Queens, celebrating both heritage and solidarity within the labor movement.

The historical significance of May Day dates back to Roman and Celtic origins, evolving into a platform for workers’ rights since the medieval period. The celebration has gained traction particularly in the UK during the Victorian era, highlighting its enduring relevance in contemporary society.

In recent developments, community health workers have been at the forefront of discussions regarding public service integration. For instance, 27,000 community health workers in South Africa have fought for their inclusion into the public health workforce, echoing similar struggles faced by workers globally.

Meanwhile, organizations like PSI have reported significant membership growth. Last year alone saw an increase of 270,000 new members from existing affiliates and new unions. Such numbers underscore a growing awareness and mobilization around labor issues worldwide.

On another front, upcoming events like the Public Service Fightback conference in Spain this September aim to further these discussions on public services and labor rights. This conference will bring together representatives from various sectors to strategize on collective action.

Khady Diaga, another speaker at the march, emphasized resilience: “You can fire me if you want, but I will not stop asking for better pay, and I will continue to encourage my colleagues to do the same.” This sentiment resonates deeply among many workers today as they navigate increasingly challenging economic conditions.

The Leeds May Day celebrations not only honor historical traditions but also serve as a rallying point for ongoing struggles in labor rights. As participants left the event with renewed energy, it was clear that this year’s march would contribute to continued advocacy for essential public services and worker protections.
