Gymnastics team final sees injury and silver
During the men’s team gymnastics final, Gabriel Langton of England sustained a significant injury after a fall from the horizontal bar. The incident occurred during the final rotation of the evening at The Arena, leading to a lengthy pause in the competition.
Langton, who is from the City of Birmingham Gymnastics Club, fell head first after missing his catch on the apparatus, which is three metres high. Medical staff attended to him on the mat for approximately 10 minutes, during which the crowd remained largely silent.
He was eventually transported from the arena on a stretcher with his head and neck stabilised, receiving applause from the spectators. Team officials confirmed that Langton was conscious and able to move his limbs and speak to doctors before being taken to hospital. Team England expressed gratitude to the medical teams for their immediate response and stated that further information would be shared when available.
Langton had been a late addition to Team England, stepping in for the injured Max Whitlock. Due to his injury, he was unable to join his teammates on the podium to receive their silver medals.
Following the delay, competition resumed, but England was unable to overcome the lead held by Canada, who secured their first gold medal in the event in 20 years. Canada had previously finished second to England in the last two games.
Luke Whitehouse, a teammate of Langton’s, was the first to compete after the restart. He scored 11.700 on the apparatus and commented on the need to refocus after such an incident. Whitehouse also mentioned that Langton was reported to be doing well, highlighting the inherent dangers of gymnastics.
Felix Dolci, who contributed to Canada‘s gold medal win and led qualifying for the all-around competition, acknowledged the difficulty and danger of gymnastics. He extended thoughts to Langton and praised England‘s focus after the incident. Hamish Carter of Team Scotland, whose team narrowly missed out on a bronze medal to Australia, also expressed concern for Langton, stating he was thinking of him despite his team not winning a medal.
Scott secures swimming gold for Scotland
In the swimming events, Duncan Scott of Scotland achieved a gold medal in the 200m individual medley at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre. This victory marked his 14th medal at the Commonwealth Games.
Scott, who trains in Stirling alongside England’s Tom Dean, finished ahead of Dean, who took the bronze medal. Lewis Clareburt of New Zealand secured the silver. Scott’s winning time of 1:56.38 was nearly half a second faster than his previous Games record set four years prior.
The 29-year-old swimmer expressed satisfaction with his performance, describing it as a relief. He acknowledged feeling a degree of expectation, particularly as it was the first day of competition and he aimed to provide a strong start for Team Scotland and generate momentum for the home crowd.
Dean, who has faced injury challenges, praised Scott’s strong start to the race, noting that he trains with Scott daily. Scott’s backstroke and breaststroke segments helped him establish a clear lead, securing his fourth Games gold medal.
Elsewhere in the pool, Adam Ramsay-Peaty won his 100m breaststroke semi-final, finishing ahead of Filip Nowacki. Australia had a successful night, claiming four gold medals, including victories in the 400m freestyle, 200m backstroke, and both the women’s and men’s 4x100m freestyle relays. England secured silver medals in both relay events.
Scott will have a break from competition over the weekend following his gold medal performance.
