Arsenal have completed the signing of Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle United for a fee of £75m. The Brazil midfielder, aged 28, has agreed a four-year deal with an option for an additional 12 months at Emirates Stadium.
Guimarães, described the move as one of the most challenging decisions of his life. He stated that while Newcastle means a great deal to him, he sought a new experience and felt prepared for a fresh challenge for himself and his family. Move to Arsenal
The transfer was finalised after a breakthrough in negotiations, leading Guimarães to leave Newcastle‘s training camp in La Manga, Spain, earlier this week. He indicated that he received messages from future teammates, including fellow Brazilian Gabriel and midfielder Declan Rice. Rice reportedly told him, “come here and please no more fights, now we’re friends,” referencing their previous encounters on the pitch.
Guimarães expressed his ambition, stating, “I’m at the point of my life, I think I need a challenge like this. I want to win trophies, I want to make history and I think I’m in the right place to do it. I’m so excited to start.”
The move marks the most expensive transfer for a midfielder aged at least 28, though this record is noted to be niche, given the previous holder, Zinedine Zidane, moved 25 years ago. This significant investment by Arsenal highlights their high regard for the player, suggesting it is a transfer focused on immediate impact.
One factor contributing to Arsenal‘s interest is Guimarães’s consistent availability, as he rarely misses matches. Additionally, his versatility allows him to play across midfield in the 4-3-3 formation often used by manager Mikel Arteta. These attributes could be particularly valuable, especially with Declan Rice managing long-term nerve pain in his hamstring and Martin Ødegaard playing 40% of possible Premier League minutes last season.
Impact and Playing Style
Guimarães is known for his ability to disrupt opposition attacks. Data from Opta reveals that Arsenal misplaced 1,492 passes in the final third last season, which was the fourth most in the Premier League. This presented numerous opportunities for opponents to counter-attack. Guimarães’s style of play, which includes being willing to commit fouls when necessary, could help address this.
He was penalised for 45 fouls in the league last season, a figure he reached in all four of his full campaigns with Newcastle. In other top European leagues, only Lazio winger Mattia Zaccagni, with 418, has won more free-kicks than Guimarães. He ranked no lower than second in the Premier League for fouls suffered in each of the previous four seasons, twice leading the standings across England, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain.
This particular skill set is seen as a significant advantage for Arsenal, a team that frequently capitalises on set pieces. Since early 2022, only two players have scored more set-piece goals than Guimarães in the Premier League, and Arsenal already has one of them, his fellow Brazilian Gabriel. Guimarães’s 12 goals represent the joint-most by a midfielder or forward from set pieces.
Time at Newcastle
Guimarães joined Newcastle in January 2022 when the team was facing relegation challenges. He played a vital role in their improved performance under former head coach Eddie Howe. During his tenure, he became the first captain in seven decades to lift a major domestic trophy for Newcastle after their victory in the Carabao Cup final.
He was also part of the team that secured qualification for the Champions League in 2023 and 2025. His departure follows those of Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, who were also key players for Newcastle and ranked among their top four for free-kicks won last season.
