Liverpool have reached an agreement to sign Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan deal. The move aims to bolster Andoni Iraola‘s defensive options following several recent setbacks.
The deal for the 27-year-old is a straight loan, with Araujo having signed a new contract with Barcelona last year, extending until 2031. He originally joined Barcelona B in 2018 before being promoted to the first team in 2019.
Defensive Reinforcements Needed at Anfield
The acquisition of Araujo comes at a crucial time for Liverpool, who have faced a shortage of fit senior centre-backs. The club recently saw Ibrahima Konate depart for Real Madrid as a free agent at the end of his contract. Additionally, several players are currently sidelined with injuries.
Joe Gomez sustained a muscle injury during Liverpool‘s opening pre-season game and is expected to miss the start of the Premier League season. Teenage centre-back Giovanni Leoni is also recovering from an ACL injury suffered in September of last year, keeping him out of full training.
Summer signing Jeremy Jacquet, who joined from Rennes, has not featured in pre-season due to a separate minor issue, following shoulder surgery that kept him out for the second half of last season. Jacquet, 21, has made fewer than 100 senior career appearances. These injuries leave captain Virgil van Dijk as the only fully fit senior centre-back available to Iraola.
During the recent pre-season tour of America, Iraola had to rely on teenage centre-backs Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Mor Talla Ndiaye, with full-back Luke Chambers also deputising in the central defence. Ndukwe, a young Austrian player, will need to be loaned out this season as he is not eligible for a work permit to play in England in 2026-27.
Araujo’s Role and Barcelona Departure
While primarily a central defender, Araujo can also provide cover at right-back. This versatility could be beneficial for Liverpool, especially with Conor Bradley sidelined due to a knee injury that is expected to keep him out for the opening months of the 2026-27 season.
Araujo has made a total of 213 first-team appearances for Barcelona since joining from Uruguayan club Boston River in January 2019. He was part of Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay squad for this summer’s World Cup, though he did not make an appearance as the nation exited at the group stage.
His departure from Barcelona follows a period where his role within the team reportedly shifted. According to one report, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick communicated to Araujo that while he would get playing time, it would not be in a key role within the defensive system. This conversation reportedly led to the swift emergence of the Liverpool option.
The move to Liverpool means Barcelona will have greater flexibility to sign and register players, though it also leaves the club short-handed in the centre-back position, an area where Flick had previously put a freeze on new signings. This development will reportedly necessitate Barcelona‘s sporting director Deco to re-enter the transfer market.
Liverpool had also held preliminary discussions with Paris Saint-Germain regarding the potential signing of Bradley Barcola. However, reports indicate a significant difference in valuation between the two clubs, with the Champions League holders valuing the 23-year-old at £145m, making a deal difficult at this stage.
Araujo, who was granted indefinite leave by Barcelona at the beginning of December before returning to the team at the end of January, leaves the Catalan club as one of its four captains.
