Tour Highlights and Player Performances
Liverpool recently concluded a two-week, three-match pre-season tour in the United States, playing in front of over 115,000 supporters across Nashville, New York, and Chicago. Head coach Andoni Iraola noted that the trip provided valuable insights into the club’s scale. The tour included victories against Sunderland and Wrexham, followed by a 4-2 defeat to Leeds United at Soldier Field in Chicago.
Iraola described the match against Leeds as the “most useful friendly” despite the loss, highlighting lessons learned from both the positive first half and the negative second half. With the opening Premier League match against Newcastle United approaching, the team faces significant work on the training field and in the transfer market.
Among the standout performers was 19-year-old midfielder Trey Nyoni, who was named the player of the tour. Nyoni’s performances, particularly against Leeds, showcased his ability to handle first-team football, winning possession and contributing to attacking plays. His development could offer a significant boost to the team’s midfield options.
Teenage winger Rio Ngumoha also impressed, with Liverpool maintaining a firm stance that he is not for sale despite interest from other clubs. Ngumoha’s versatility was evident as he played on both flanks, scoring against Wrexham and causing problems for Leeds defenders. His link-up play with Milos Kerkez was particularly promising.
Dominik Szoboszlai, who recently signed a new five-year contract, stepped up as stand-in captain in the absence of players like Virgil van Dijk. Szoboszlai’s fitness and sharpness were notable across all three games, and he scored a goal against Sunderland. He expressed satisfaction with the team’s progress, acknowledging the need to improve on set-piece defence.
Defender Luke Chambers, 22, was pressed into duty at centre-back in all three matches due to defensive depletions. He scored the opening goal against Leeds and his performances have given Iraola reason to consider keeping him at the club rather than sending him out on loan. Chambers’ ability to play in two defensive positions is seen as a valuable asset.
Challenges and Setbacks
The tour also presented challenges, particularly with injuries. Joe Gomez, Liverpool’s longest-serving player, sustained a muscle injury in the opening game against Sunderland, which is expected to keep him out for approximately a month. This setback is particularly unfortunate given his history of injuries, which has limited his appearances over his 11-year tenure at Anfield.
Other key players, including Virgil van Dijk, Victor Munoz, Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo, and Alisson, were absent due to post-World Cup breaks. Additionally, Jeremy Jacquet, Hugo Ekitike, Conor Bradley, Wataru Endo, Giovanni Leoni, and Stefan Bajcetic did not feature due to ongoing rehabilitation or fitness concerns, further highlighting the squad’s depth issues.
The team’s performance in the second half against Leeds, where they conceded four goals after holding a two-goal lead, underscored defensive vulnerabilities. This has prompted Iraola to consider the need for reinforcements in both attack and defence before the start of the season.
Off the field, some players engaged in local activities. Conor Bradley, Freddie Woodman, Joe Gomez, Curtis Jones, and Kostas Tsimikas formed a “coffee club” in Chicago, exploring local shops. Conor Bradley and Freddie Woodman also visited Mr. Beef, a restaurant made famous by a TV show, where they were welcomed by the owner, Chris Zucchero.
The squad also visited the Chicago Bulls’ United Center facility, with Joe Gomez pushing to gift the local basketball franchise a shirt. Goalkeeper Harvey Davies demonstrated quick reflexes by blocking a basketball heading towards a media camera, preventing potential damage.
