Tottenham’s pursuit of Cody Gakpo
Tottenham Hotspur continues to show interest in Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo as the summer transfer window progresses. Liverpool’s stance on Gakpo
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola and his team had not initially planned to sell Gakpo this summer, leaving them with a decision to make regarding his future. Tottenham is currently awaiting further information from Liverpool before they can attempt to finalise a deal for the forward.
Gakpo has been a part of the Merseyside club since 2023, following five campaigns as a regular with PSV. Despite a recent downturn in form, Liverpool could still seek a significant fee for his transfer. Some reports indicate that Liverpool might demand upwards of £50million for Gakpo, with other reports suggesting an asking price of around £72m.
Liverpool is understood to be open to selling Gakpo, setting an asking price of around €85m. This valuation reportedly follows Anthony Gordon’s move to Barcelona for €80m. The club’s decision to consider selling Gakpo is partly due to increased competition for his position, particularly with the reported interest in Bradley Barcola and the emergence of Rio Ngumoha.
While Gakpo knows he is expected to continue playing a role under Andoni Iraola at Liverpool, there is a growing acknowledgment that he might not be considered a guaranteed first-choice option long-term. Liverpool’s teenage talent Rio Ngumoha is reportedly on track to become the starting left winger, and further attacking reinforcements are anticipated. Alexander Isak is established as Liverpool’s primary central striker, potentially leading to a more rotational role for Gakpo than he might prefer.
Despite the player’s openness to a move, Liverpool’s current stance, according to some sources, shows little encouragement towards Tottenham’s enquiries. The Reds reportedly have no immediate desire to sanction Gakpo’s departure, indicating that they are planning for the new season with him as a part of Iraola’s squad. However, discussions with Gakpo’s representatives have been positive, with his camp reportedly receptive to hearing Tottenham’s plans and considering a new challenge this summer.
Tottenham sees Gakpo as a versatile attacker capable of playing on the left wing and leading the line, which could make him a central figure in their attack. Any move for Gakpo would not impact Tottenham’s continued pursuit of Manchester City winger Savinho, as the club views the two players as fulfilling different roles within Thomas Frank’s squad.
For now, Tottenham must wait for Liverpool to confirm their exact intentions before a deal for Gakpo can potentially be reached.
