RAF personnel participated in Anzac Day ceremonies across various locations, including Harrogate and RAF Lakenheath, to honor the sacrifices of military servicemen. This year’s commemorations paid tribute to 97 members of the Royal Australian Air Force and 23 from the Royal New Zealand Air Force.
An F-15E Strike Eagle at RAF Lakenheath was specially painted to mark the 40th anniversary of Operation El Dorado Canyon, a significant military response to the bombing of the La Belle discotheque in West Berlin.
Meanwhile, RAF troops have been actively engaged in operations in the Middle East. They successfully intercepted over 100 Iranian drones and missiles aimed at coalition bases during recent conflicts. Reports indicate that these bases faced an average of 28 drone and missile attacks daily.
The Ministry of Defence is currently discussing ways to expand the UK’s counter-drone capabilities, reflecting the increasing threats faced by coalition forces. Air Chief Marshal Harv Smyth confirmed that this topic is under active consideration.
Wing Commander David Buckingham expressed pride in representing RAF Leeming at the Anzac Day ceremony, emphasizing the importance of remembering those who served. Al Carns acknowledged the critical role played by RAF forces, stating, “The base would probably be a smouldering wreck if it wasn’t for you guys.”
