Two historic businesses, Quiz Clothing and Routledges the Bakers, have collapsed into administration as of May 1, 2026. This development underscores the severe challenges facing the retail sector, which has been grappling with rising costs and changing consumer habits.
Quiz Clothing, which has operated for 33 years, fell into administration owing £40 million. The company had a significant presence with 40 stores across the UK and seven concessions in Ireland, employing a total of 565 staff. Following its administration announcement, Quiz Clothing’s administrators, Interpath, expect the trading period to last until mid-May 2026.
Meanwhile, Routledges the Bakers has a long history of nearly 109 years before its recent demise. The bakery cited rising operational costs—an increase of £80,000 compared to the previous year—as a critical factor leading to its closure. Ultimately, Routledges faced a financial shortfall of nearly £779,000 before entering liquidation.
Both businesses reflect a broader trend in retail where many companies struggle to adapt to economic pressures. As Quiz Clothing announced 109 redundancies at its head office and distribution center, Routledges closed all its branches across Carlisle permanently.
The closures of these two brands raise concerns about job losses and economic stability in their respective communities. While Quiz Clothing’s administrators work through the administration process, Routledges has already ceased operations entirely.
This situation highlights not only the fragility of traditional retail but also points to a pressing need for innovation within the sector. As companies navigate these turbulent times, many will be watching closely to see how others respond to similar financial challenges.
