Chelsea has announced the signing of Pep Chavarria from La Liga side Rayo Vallecano. The left-back has agreed to a contract at Stamford Bridge until 2031, and will join his new teammates at Cobham as preparations begin for the 2026/27 campaign. The transfer fee for Chavarria is approximately £16.3m, with an additional £1.7m in add-ons.

Chavarria’s unconventional journey
Chavarria’s path to an elite club like Chelsea has been described as unconventional. Unlike many players who emerge from prestigious academies or achieve early breakthroughs in top-flight football, Chavarria took a longer route. He did not make his La Liga debut until the age of 24, an age when many players have already established themselves at the highest level.
Born in Figueres, Catalonia, Chavarria began his career with his hometown club, UE Figueres, then in the Spanish fourth tier. He made his senior debut at 18 years old. Over the next two seasons, he developed into an attacking left-back. In the summer of 2018, he joined third-tier club UE Olot, where he quickly became a starter and a notable player in the division, making 52 appearances.
In August 2020, Chavarria moved to Real Zaragoza, then in the Spanish second division, where he made his professional debut the following month in a 2-2 draw against Las Palmas. He spent two full seasons with Zaragoza before signing with Rayo Vallecano in August 2022, marking his entry into La Liga.
Impact at Rayo Vallecano and Chelsea’s new system
During his four years at Rayo Vallecano, Chavarria became a consistent presence on the left side of defence, making 125 appearances for the club. He developed into a dependable top-flight full-back, known for combining defensive aggression with the physicality required for the role. Rayo Vallecano, not typically expected to compete with Spain’s more established clubs, has a history of identifying undervalued players and maximizing their strengths, a model Chavarria exemplified after joining for less than £2m.
His performances included an excellent defensive display in a goalless draw against Real Madrid in November, where he faced Xabi Alonso’s team. This performance reportedly left an impression on Alonso, who later became Chelsea manager and targeted Chavarria. Last season, Chavarria featured 44 times for Rayo, helping them reach the UEFA Conference League final, where they were narrowly defeated 1-0 by Crystal Palace.
Chavarria’s arrival at Chelsea, alongside new right-back Marco Palestra, who joined from Atalanta for £47m in July, provides Alonso with the opportunity to implement his wing-back system. This system was instrumental in helping Bayer Leverkusen win the Bundesliga title in 2024. The signing also adds depth to the left-back position following Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid in June for £51.8m.
Negotiations and club finances
The deal for Chavarria was reportedly challenging to conclude. Chelsea was initially informed by Rayo Vallecano that they would not sell the player unless his release clause, valued at £42.4m, was met. Sources described the talks as “complicated,” with Rayo insisting on the full payment of the release clause. The club believed the price was justified, citing Chavarria’s underlying statistics as comparable to Cucurella’s.
Rayo Vallecano was in a strong financial position, partly due to its successful player-trading model, which allowed them to resist offers. Chavarria also had four years remaining on his contract. Additionally, Rayo would have been liable for a 25% tax charge on any extra profit generated from a sale, which would have reduced the net value of any fee received. Chavarria scored once last season and provided three assists across all competitions, creating 27 chances from open play in La Liga.
