Manchester: Youri Tielemans discusses move to United, past injuries, and playing with Marcus Rashford

Manchester United: Youri Tielemans on his dream move, injuries and playing with Marcus Rashford

Tielemans’ move to Manchester United

Youri Tielemans has joined Manchester United, marking the third time the club has shown interest in the midfielder. United previously considered signing Tielemans in 2019, following his loan spell at Leicester, and again in 2022. This July, while Tielemans was on World Cup duty, United secured his transfer from Aston Villa by triggering a release clause.

Tielemans acknowledged the prior discussions with the club, stating that nothing materialised on those occasions. He expressed gratitude to Aston Villa, noting their role in helping him regain his form. The midfielder described joining Manchester United as a significant achievement, indicating it reflects well on his career so far, but emphasised his desire for continued success at his new club.

Adjusting to the new team and manager’s vision

Tielemans has integrated with the United squad during their pre-season tour, making his debut in a 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg. He described adjusting to manager Michael Carrick’s vision as natural, comparing it to “smelling football.” Carrick’s approach involves a structured system focused on ball possession and specific pressing strategies.

The midfielder had a brief conversation with Carrick before finalising his move, and the past 10 days have provided further insight into the manager’s expectations. Carrick wants Tielemans to operate freely on the pitch and help organise the team. Tielemans believes these are logical principles, aligning with his footballing instincts developed since his youth at Anderlecht.

A partnership with captain Bruno Fernandes appears to be developing, with officials noting their connection during the match in Gothenburg, despite them only playing together for 26 minutes. Tielemans highlighted Fernandes’ ability to find space, aiming to facilitate his forward movement.

Injury history and playing alongside former teammates

Tielemans made his professional debut for Anderlecht at the age of 16. He has accumulated 668 games for club and country. Last season, he was limited to 25 starts in the Premier League due to injury. He also experienced a hamstring issue during the warm-up for Belgium’s World Cup quarter-final against Spain.

Despite his extensive career and recent injury concerns, Tielemans stated he does not believe he requires frequent rest. He explained that the issue during the World Cup warm-up was an “overload of too many games; too many minutes” following demanding fixtures against Senegal and the US. He indicated that he would alert the manager if he felt unable to perform, but that such instances are rare.

Tielemans is finding familiar faces at Manchester United, including Jonny Evans, a former teammate from Leicester. Evans provided a positive reference to head coach Michael Carrick. Tielemans also played with Harry Maguire at Leicester for a period and with Marcus Rashford at Aston Villa.

He spoke positively about Rashford’s time at Aston Villa, describing him as humble and hard-working despite external pressure. Tielemans noted Rashford’s “amazing” touch and acceleration, expressing hope that he can bring those qualities to Manchester United. Rashford has returned to his boyhood club after his time at Villa.

Tielemans’ arrival is seen as potentially addressing a long-standing need for Manchester United since Carrick’s departure in 2018: a creative midfielder capable of breaking defensive lines. This could allow Fernandes more advanced positioning and help the team control games, moving beyond a primary reliance on counter-attacks. Tielemans joined Manchester United from Aston Villa in July.
