Jon Lee is set to return to EastEnders on May 1, 2026, nearly 30 years after his original appearance in 1997. He will reprise his role as Josh Saunders for the funeral of Nigel Bates, a character who has been central to the show’s ongoing dementia storyline.
Lee’s character, Josh, originally appeared in just 20 episodes during the show’s run in 1997. The upcoming episodes will see him return alongside other familiar faces as they gather to say their final goodbyes to Nigel Bates, played by Paul Bradley, who passed away after a long battle with dementia.
Gemma Bissix will also make an appearance as Clare, Nigel’s estranged stepdaughter. This gathering not only serves as a poignant farewell but also highlights the importance of community in EastEnders, especially during challenging times.
Reflecting on his return, Jon Lee expressed that it felt quite surreal stepping back onto Albert Square after so many years. He stated, “It was quite surreal stepping back on to Albert Square after so many years as it’s so familiar to so many of us.” This reunion comes as part of the farewell episodes for Nigel Bates, bringing together significant characters from his past.
The storyline represents a culmination of a long-running narrative arc focused on dementia within the show. Lee’s involvement adds depth and nostalgia, connecting new viewers with longstanding fans.
In addition to his work on EastEnders, Jon Lee gained fame as a member of the pop group S Club 7, known for hits like ‘Bring It All Back’ and ‘Don’t Stop Movin’. Since leaving the soap opera in 1998, he has made various TV appearances, including on shows like ‘Celebs Go Dating’.
The anticipation around Jon Lee’s return and its connection to such an emotional storyline has sparked interest among fans. As Gemma Bissix noted about her character’s relationship with Nigel: “He meant so much to her, and it felt right to be there for the conclusion of his story, as everyone came together to say their final goodbyes.”
