The 2026 Met Gala theme, ‘Costume Art,’ focuses on the importance of the dressed body in art history. Scheduled for May 4, 2026, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, this year’s event aims to redefine how fashion interacts with artistic expression.
Previously, expectations centered around themes that often included subtitles or specific cultural references. However, this year marks a shift as Andrew Bolton presents a theme without a subtitle for the first time, signaling a bold new direction for the Costume Institute.
The exhibition will cover nearly 12,000 square feet within the Condé M. Nast Galleries and will feature an extensive collection that spans 5,000 years of art. It will include paintings, sculptures, and garments that collectively highlight fashion’s historical significance.
Experts in fashion and art have noted that this theme emphasizes the interconnectedness of various artistic disciplines. Andrew Bolton remarked, “What connects every curatorial department and what connects every single gallery in the museum is fashion, or the dressed body.” This perspective invites attendees to consider how clothing serves as both an aesthetic and cultural artifact.
Moreover, the red carpet will feature a hand-painted design resembling a stone garden pathway, integrating natural elements into the event’s aesthetic. The carpet design includes a tan color with patches of moss green and is framed by wisteria lining the tent’s ceiling and walls.
