Before this wave of violence, the Jewish community historically viewed the UK as one of the safest places since World War II. However, recent events have shattered this sense of security.
In addition to the Golders Green stabbing, there have been alarming incidents, including a knife attack at a Manchester synagogue during Yom Kippur that resulted in two fatalities. Furthermore, four ambulances belonging to the Jewish volunteer organization Hatzola were set ablaze in March.
These attacks have led many within the approximately 300,000-strong Jewish community to feel increasingly insecure, particularly in urban areas like London and Manchester. Community leaders are now calling for a temporary moratorium on pro-Palestinian demonstrations that they believe could incite further violence.
In response to these escalating threats, the British government announced £25 million for enhanced security measures aimed at protecting Jewish communities. Additionally, Labour leader Keir Starmer has pledged to review legislation that would enable authorities to ban protests deemed as threats to public order.
Community leaders like Ephraim Mirvis have voiced their concerns publicly, stating that it is time for the silent majority to raise their voices against antisemitism. He emphasized that if similar attacks occurred against any other minority group, the response would be markedly different.
The police are currently investigating possible links between these recent antisemitic attacks and Iranian influences. Meanwhile, the Stop the War coalition has condemned antisemitism while opposing restrictions on civil liberties.
