Stokes announces international retirement
Ben Stokes, the England captain, announced his retirement from international cricket on Sunday, during the fourth day of the third Test against New Zealand. This decision means the match will be his final international appearance. Stokes, who is 35, communicated his decision to his teammates before the start of day four, with the official announcement made at 15:25 BST. Immediately following the announcement, he took the wicket of Zak Foulkes with his next delivery.
Stokes later stated that ending his international career was the “best thing” for him, while denying that the decision was a direct result of recent turbulent events. He confirmed his intention to continue playing for Durham. The all-rounder explained that thoughts about his future had been present since the Ashes series and before the New Zealand series opener at Lord’s.
He described the Lord’s Test as bringing back “negative feelings” about his career, suggesting he might have “burnt himself out” after putting significant effort into making things right following the Ashes. Stokes missed the second Test after an incident in a London nightclub but was subsequently cleared to return as captain for the third Test at Trent Bridge.
Vaughan calls for more leadership changes
Following Stokes’ retirement, former captain Michael Vaughan indicated he would be “absolutely staggered” if there were no further leadership changes within English cricket. Vaughan suggested that changes at the top could potentially lead to Stokes returning to the international fold in the future. He believes that change is necessary given recent cricketing performances.
Vaughan also highlighted a “lack of trust” between Stokes and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) following the nightclub incident, describing it as “probably the final nail.” He suggested there was fault on both sides regarding how the ECB handled the situation.
