Group B permutations for Canada and Switzerland
Canada and Switzerland are set to face each other in a crucial final Group B match, with both teams aiming to secure the best possible position for the World Cup 2026 knockout stages. The host nation, Canada, currently leads the group after a significant 6-0 victory against Qatar in their previous fixture. This win marked Canada’s first-ever World Cup triumph, following an earlier draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Switzerland, after an initial draw with Qatar, found their form with a 4-1 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina. Both teams enter their upcoming match tied on four points, meaning the winner of Group B will be determined in Vancouver.
Qualification scenarios for the hosts
If Canada avoids defeat against Switzerland, they will secure the top spot in Group B. This would lead to a knockout stage encounter with one of the third-placed teams from Group E, F, G, I, or J. However, a loss to Switzerland could complicate their path.
Canada holds a head-to-head advantage over Qatar due to their substantial win. Therefore, if Qatar defeats Bosnia and draws level on points with Canada, the host nation would still remain ahead in the qualification standings. Should Bosnia win the other Group B match, qualification would then depend on goal difference, as the two sides drew their earlier game in Toronto.
Despite this, Canada possesses a goal difference advantage of nine over Bosnia heading into the final group game. However, a dominant performance by Switzerland against Canada, combined with a large victory for Bosnia over Qatar, could alter the standings significantly.

Switzerland’s path to the knockouts
Given their inferior goal difference compared to Canada, Switzerland must defeat the hosts to claim the top position in Group B. A draw would be sufficient for them to finish second and qualify for the round of 32, where they would potentially face the runner-up of Group A, which could be South Korea, South Africa, or Czech Republic.
A defeat for Switzerland would place them in a similar situation to Canada, with their progression dependent on other results. If Bosnia beats Qatar, Switzerland would advance as group runners-up due to the head-to-head rule. However, if Qatar wins, Switzerland would need to ensure Qatar’s victory is not large enough to overcome their own nine-goal difference advantage, which would allow Qatar to leapfrog them into second place.

Tie-breaking rules for Group B
If teams finish with an equal number of points, their group standing is first determined by their head-to-head record against the team they are level with. If one team has beaten another with the same points total, that team will finish higher in the table.
In cases where multiple teams are level on points, a mini-league is formed using only the results from matches between those tied teams. Rankings are then decided by points accumulated in these specific matches, followed by goal difference, and then goals scored. If teams remain tied, the overall group goal difference and then overall goals scored are considered.
Further tie-breakers include the Team Conduct Score (TCS), which is a fair play score based on accumulated cards. Points are deducted for yellow cards, red cards for two yellows, straight red cards, and a yellow followed by a straight red. The team with a score closer to zero progresses. If teams are still level, the higher Fifa ranking from the June update would be the final determinant.
The top eight third-placed teams across all groups will also advance, decided first by points, then by goal difference if multiple teams have the same number of points. Teams with four or more points are likely to progress, while those with three points would need a strong goal difference.
Switzerland secured a 4-1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in their previous match.
