Chelsea have reached an agreement with Aston Villa for the transfer of Morgan Rogers in a deal valued at £117m. The attacking midfielder is expected to undergo a medical examination on Monday upon his return from America, following England‘s World Cup campaign. Rogers is anticipated to sign a six-year contract with an option for an additional year at Stamford Bridge.
This transfer would make Rogers the most expensive British player, surpassing the £116m paid by Manchester City for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer. He is also set to become Chelsea’s record signing, exceeding the £115m the club spent on Moises Caicedo in 2023. Rogers was a key target for Chelsea’s new manager, Xabi Alonso, who was appointed in May.
Last season, the 23-year-old contributed significantly to Villa’s success, scoring 14 goals and providing 11 assists in 55 appearances. He played an instrumental role in Villa securing Champions League football and winning the Europa League. Despite Villa’s success and the opportunity for Champions League football, Rogers is set to join Chelsea, a club without European football for the upcoming season.
Arsenal had also identified Rogers as their primary forward target this summer and had been in contact with Villa. However, Arsenal were reportedly unwilling to meet the asking price. Rogers’ move to Chelsea is seen as a significant statement of intent by the club, particularly after a disappointing previous season.
Impact on Aston Villa and Middlesbrough
Rogers’ departure is a major blow for Aston Villa, who had secured Champions League football and European silverware last season. Villa were under no pressure to sell Rogers, as he had extended his contract until 2031. The club has already seen Youri Tielemans move to Manchester United, and Paris Saint-Germain are expected to activate Lucas Digne‘s release clause.
Middlesbrough stands to benefit financially from Rogers’ transfer due to a sell-on clause agreed when he moved to Aston Villa in January 2024. Middlesbrough sold Rogers for £15.5m, with a clause entitling them to 20 per cent of any future profit Villa made on his sale. This clause is expected to generate an additional £20.3m for Middlesbrough, bringing their total earnings from Rogers’ sale to £35.8m, with a profit of £34.7m.
Rogers joined Middlesbrough from Manchester City in July 2023 for £1.1m and played for them for six months before his move to Villa. His rapid progression from a young prospect to an England international, with 21 caps, highlights his development. He made five appearances during the 2026 World Cup, providing an assist in England’s semi-final defeat to Argentina.
Shirt Number Options at Chelsea
As Rogers prepares for his move to Chelsea, discussions about his potential shirt number have emerged. Senior numbers from No1 to No11 are currently occupied. Rogers wears No27 at Aston Villa, but this number is taken by Malo Gusto at Chelsea.
Several numbers are available for Rogers, including No16, which was recently vacated by Lesley Ugochukwu. The No17 shirt is also free following Andrey Santos‘ transfer to Manchester United. Additionally, No18 is available, last worn by Christopher Nkunku, and previously by players such as Olivier Giroud and Romelu Lukaku.
Other available numbers include No22 and No26. If Rogers were to choose No22, he would follow in the footsteps of players like Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Hakim Ziyech, and Willian. The No26 shirt, historically associated with John Terry, has typically been reserved for central defenders, with Levi Colwill and Kalidou Koulibaly having worn it since the club legend.
Rogers would be the seventh former Manchester City youth player to join Chelsea since the club’s new takeover, a trend overseen by Chelsea’s co-director of recruitment and talent, Joe Shields. Shields previously worked as Manchester City’s head of academy recruitment and talent management. Other former City youth players who have joined Chelsea include Jamie Gittens, Liam Delap, Jadon Sancho, Tosin Adarabioyo, Romeo Lavia, and Cole Palmer.
The total expenditure on these former City youth players, including the anticipated fee for Rogers, amounts to approximately £296.5m. Chelsea have also bolstered their transfer budget by selling Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid and Andrey Santos to Manchester United. Further funds could become available if an offer is received for Enzo Fernández, who reportedly wishes to leave the club.
Chelsea are also reportedly tracking Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton and are interested in signing French defender Maxence Lacroix from Palace. Aston Villa, meanwhile, are expected to reinvest the funds from Rogers’ sale into their squad. Roma has made an offer of £39m to West Ham for Crysencio Summerville.
Rogers is expected to become a Chelsea player early next week, provided he passes his medical examination on Monday.
