Egypt secures progression, Iran awaits
Egypt has advanced to the Round of 32 in the World Cup after securing second place in Group G following a 1-1 draw against Iran. The match, held in Seattle, saw both teams battle intensely, with Egypt ultimately booking their spot in the knockout stages. Their next fixture will be against Australia in Dallas on July 3.
For Iran, the situation is more precarious. Despite remaining unbeaten in the group stage with three draws, their progression as one of the best third-placed teams is not yet confirmed. The team must await the results of other group matches to determine if their point tally is sufficient to move forward.
Match highlights and key moments
The encounter at Lumen Field was marked by early goals and significant drama. Egypt took the lead after just five minutes when Mahmoud Saber capitalised on a rebound from a shot by Mohamed Salah, slotting the ball into the net. This put Egypt ahead 1-0.
Iran responded swiftly. Four minutes later, Mehdi Taremi earned a penalty, but his spot-kick was saved by Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir. However, Iran found their equaliser in the 15th minute through Ramin Rezaeian. Following a save from a Milad Mohammadi shot, Rezaeian reacted quickly to power the rebound into the top corner, levelling the score at 1-1.
The first half was particularly physical, with four bookings issued for tackles. Both teams displayed a blend of nervous energy, late tackles, and forceful shoulder-barges, alongside periods of quick and entertaining football.
Egypt made several changes to their line-up, with Mohamed Abdelmonem and Ramy Rabia replacing Hamdi Fathy and Yasser Ibrahim in defence. Mahmoud Saber came in for Marwan Attia in midfield, and Trezeguet started on the right wing in place of Omar Marmoush. These changes also affected Egypt’s attacking shape, with Mostafa Zico moving to a forward role and Emam Ashour switching flanks, while Mohamed Salah maintained his position in the number 10 role.
Iran made only one change from their previous match against Belgium, with Milad Mohammadi replacing Ehsan Hajisafi at left wing-back. The rest of their attacking line remained unchanged.
Despite Egypt having more possession and two more attempts on goal, Iran created five big chances compared to Egypt’s none, and generated more than double the expected goals (xG). Ramin Rezaeian was noted as the highest-scoring defender in the game, contributing significantly to Iran’s offensive efforts.
A significant moment occurred when Mohamed Salah left the pitch before the hour mark due to an injury. Mohamed Abdelmonem had also exited the game earlier, after just 14 minutes. These injuries raise concerns for Egypt’s upcoming matches, particularly regarding Salah’s fitness.
The match reached a dramatic climax in stoppage time when Iran’s Shoja Khalilzadeh appeared to score a winning goal. However, the goal was disallowed after a VAR review for offside. The decision was made because Khalilzadeh was deemed to be in an offside position when his teammate Mohammad Ghorbani’s initial effort rebounded off the goalkeeper, with only one Egypt player between Khalilzadeh and the goal line at that moment.
Following the disallowed goal, Iran continued to press, with Ramin Rezaeian having a shot heroically blocked and Saeid Ezatolahi hitting the crossbar with a header. Despite these late opportunities, Egypt held on for the draw.
Iran’s qualification now hinges on other results. They need one of the following scenarios to occur: DR Congo fail to beat Uzbekistan, Ghana beat Croatia, or Algeria and Austria avoid a draw. If Algeria and Austria draw their match, DR Congo beat Uzbekistan, and Croatia get at least a point against Ghana, Iran would be eliminated.
