A police officer was hospitalised with head injuries after being struck by a glass bottle during clashes with football fans on Edgware Road in northwest London. The incident occurred late Thursday night following Morocco’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a match against France. Officers were initially called to the area after a group of people congregated in the road, blocking traffic.
The situation escalated as bottles were thrown at police and fireworks were launched. Reports indicate that scores of officers were deployed to the scene, with police in riot gear forming a line across the road to manage the crowds. The officer’s injury is believed to have been caused by a glass bottle. No other injuries were reported during the disorder.

Similar scenes of public unrest in London had also unfolded after Egypt’s World Cup exit, following a 3-2 victory by Argentina that featured several disputed officiating decisions. The police presence will remain in the Edgware Road area overnight as investigations continue into the disorder that occurred after Morocco’s World Cup elimination.
