Incidents involving fans
In London, a young fan wearing an Argentina shirt with “Messi” on the back was escorted by police into a van in Piccadilly Circus. Officers formed a protective group around the fan to clear a path through a large crowd. Onlookers reportedly jeered the fan as he was led to the vehicle, and at least one object was observed being thrown in his direction. Police managed to clear a path for the van to depart, with many people filming the event amidst what were described as chaotic scenes. The Metropolitan Police frequently separates football fans from opposing teams as a precautionary measure, and no further incidents were reported in connection with this event. There is no indication of any wrongdoing by the fan or others depicted in the incident.
Prior to the match, footage shared online reportedly showed Argentina fans engaging in altercations and throwing various items, including bottles and furniture, in Atlanta, USA. These incidents occurred hours before the World Cup semi-final match between England and Argentina. Reports indicated that two groups of Argentina fans were involved in brawls, with social media footage showing bins being thrown along with kicks and punches. Local police intervened to separate the groups, which subsequently dispersed. It is not known if any arrests were made in connection with these incidents.
England’s World Cup semi-final
The match itself saw England‘s hopes of ending a long wait for a World Cup title dashed. Supporters had been optimistic about their team’s chances against the defending champions, despite concerns about Lionel Messi. The mood was initially joyous after Anthony Gordon scored for England approximately 10 minutes into the second half, following a goalless first 45 minutes. However, Enzo Fernandez equalised for Argentina around the 85-minute mark, and Lautaro Martinez then put Argentina in the lead in the 92nd minute.
Following the final whistle, fans at Boxpark in Wembley were seen to be visibly upset. Twin brothers Luke and Vee Moore, who attended the venue, expressed disappointment with England‘s performance, particularly criticising manager Thomas Tuchel‘s defensive substitutions. Vee Moore stated that England “fumbled it” and described the Argentina team as “weak,” suggesting England did not face a superior side and played too defensively after taking the lead. Luke Moore echoed this sentiment, believing England should have made earlier attacking substitutions with players like Rashford, Madueke, and Saka to secure the win.
Thomas Tuchel‘s tactical approach was a point of contention among some fans, with Luke Moore describing it as “too negative” and comparing him to a reactive manager rather than a proactive one. He expressed a preference for a manager with a more proactive style, such as Klopp or Guardiola, to maximise the potential of the players.
Team selections and upcoming final
For the semi-final, Thomas Tuchel made three changes to the England squad. Morgan Rogers was given a starting position, replacing Noni Madueke on the right side of the attack. Full-backs Reece James and Djed Spence were also included in the starting lineup. John Stones and Marc Guehi maintained their central defensive partnership, while Ezri Konsa and Nico O’Reilly were not in the starting XI. Declan Rice started in midfield, despite having been affected by an illness picked up in Mexico, which led to his substitution at half-time in a previous match against Norway.
Argentina‘s starting lineup included five Premier League players: Emiliano Martinez from Villa, Tottenham defender Cristian Romero, Manchester United‘s Lisandro Martinez, Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, and Liverpool‘s Alexis Mac Allister. These players all started for the defending champions in the semi-final match. Argentina is now set to play Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday.
