This agreement was reached in early June, with personal terms also reportedly settled with the player. The Brazilian midfielder, 27, had indicated his eagerness to join Manchester United, with hints during the World Cup suggesting the move was nearly finalised.
Reports had indicated that a fee of £35million, plus £3.8million in add-ons, was agreed with Atalanta before the World Cup. Ederson was expected to sign a four-year contract. The finalisation of the deal was reportedly delayed until Brazil’s participation in the World Cup concluded, which occurred earlier than anticipated when Brazil was eliminated by Norway before the quarter-finals.
Following Brazil’s exit, Ederson was reportedly clear to complete his move to Old Trafford. It was suggested that he would travel to England to undergo a medical examination and finalise his transfer to Manchester United.
Uncertainty Surrounds Transfer Amid Medical Reports
Despite earlier agreements, recent reports have cast doubt on Ederson’s transfer to Manchester United. Brazilian news outlet O’Globo claimed the deal was called off after his medical. Journalist Fabrizio Romano also suggested that an underlying knee issue was discovered during a medical examination in the UK, potentially derailing the transfer.
Multiple reports on Friday evening indicated that the Brazil international would not be moving to Old Trafford. However, Manchester United has reportedly denied claims that they have reversed their decision to sign Ederson, with some sources indicating the club does not consider the move to be off.
One report suggests that Manchester United are still planning to sign Ederson. Another journalist, Ross Harwood, stated that Ederson has completed his second medical to become a United player, adding to the conflicting information surrounding the transfer.
Other Midfield Targets and Goalkeeper Signings
While the situation with Ederson remains fluid, Manchester United continues to pursue other transfer targets. The club is reportedly close to completing the signing of midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea in a deal worth £48million, with an additional £2million in add-ons. Nicky Butt, a former Manchester United midfielder, has expressed concerns regarding this proposed signing.
Strengthening the midfield appears to be a priority for Manchester United. Other players linked with Old Trafford include Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni, who is reportedly valued at £85million, and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, who has an £80million valuation. Felix Nmecha from Borussia Dortmund is another option, valued at around £103million.
In terms of goalkeepers, Manchester United is reportedly close to signing Karl Darlow on a free transfer after he left Leeds United. The 35-year-old is expected to serve as a backup to Senne Lammens, with three other goalkeepers anticipated to depart Old Trafford this summer. Senne Lammens recently made his World Cup debut for Belgium, coming on for the injured Courtois.
Additionally, Paraguay’s Orlando Gill, 26, has emerged as a potential target after his performances at the 2026 World Cup, where he was named Player of the Match against both Germany and France.
