Morgan Rogers Joins Chelsea in Record-Breaking Deal

Morgan Rogers interview: On joy, family and finding his best self | News | Official Site

Morgan Rogers has completed his move to Chelsea from Aston Villa, signing a seven-year deal. The agreement for the 23-year-old to join Stamford Bridge was reached recently, with Chelsea securing his signature ahead of Arsenal, who had also been in discussions to sign the England international.

A significant factor in Rogers’ decision to choose west London was the opportunity to work under new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso. Rogers expressed excitement about the project, the new manager, and the direction the club is heading. He stated that Chelsea is a club he has always admired since childhood, considering them the biggest club in London.

A New Chapter at Chelsea

Rogers, who recently returned from helping England secure a third-place finish at the World Cup, is eager to make an impact. He started in England’s 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina and the 6-4 win over France, which earned the bronze medal. His footballing philosophy is rooted in joy and spirit, aiming to maintain happiness despite the pressures of top-level play.

The attacking midfielder is also looking forward to playing alongside his friend Cole Palmer, a prospect they have discussed for years. This season will mark their first time playing senior football for the same club at a domestic level. Rogers is described as a versatile forward, capable of playing multiple attacking roles, which addresses a need for Chelsea.

His rise at Villa Park was rapid following his move from Middlesbrough in January 2024. During his time at Villa, he contributed to a top-four finish and qualification for the Europa League last season. He departs Aston Villa having scored 31 times in 125 appearances under Unai Emery.

Overcoming Challenges and Family Support

Rogers reflected on the challenges he has faced throughout his career, including difficult loan spells and periods away from home. His loans from Manchester City to Lincoln, Bournemouth, and Blackpool were instrumental in teaching him how to handle adversity, such as not playing or fighting against relegation. These experiences helped him develop a stronger mentality and adapt to different situations.

Family support has been crucial for Rogers. He acknowledged his family for providing him with the platform to pursue football and for their continuous encouragement. Several family members accompanied him to Cobham, Chelsea’s training ground, underscoring their importance in his journey.

His elder brother, Daniel, a therapist who has previously worked with Chelsea, has also played a significant role. Daniel’s guidance has helped Rogers navigate the increased scrutiny that comes with being a prominent player, especially since his move to Aston Villa and his representation of England, including at the recent World Cup.

Rogers emphasised the importance of mental well-being for players, noting that disappointment affects athletes just as it does anyone else. He values the support and guidance from his brother and the rest of his family in maintaining a positive mindset.

This transfer is considered one of the most significant acquisitions during BlueCo’s ownership of Chelsea. Co-owner Behdad Eghbali had previously indicated a focus on signing players who could help the club challenge for titles, following an underwhelming campaign where the team finished 10th and exited the Champions League in the last 16. The hiring of Xabi Alonso, a two-time Champions League winner as a player, was partly intended to attract high-calibre players to the club. Rogers becomes the fourth summer signing for Chelsea, following the arrivals of Marco Palestra, Emmanuel Emegha, and Geovany Quenda.

Rogers will celebrate his 24th birthday on Sunday.
