Ronald Koeman has resigned from his position as head coach of the Netherlands national team following their defeat to Morocco in the last-32 stage of the World Cup. The decision came after Monday’s match, which saw the Dutch side exit the tournament. Koeman announced his departure via a statement on Instagram, acknowledging that the team “fell short” of their goal to “make history at this World Cup.”
Koeman, a 63-year-old former defender, took charge of the national team in January 2023, having previously managed them from 2018 to 2020. In his statement, he also hinted at a potential retirement from coaching, reflecting on personal experiences. He mentioned that recent years have shifted his perspective, highlighting the importance of health over football, especially while his wife, Bartina, battled illness. He expressed profound gratitude for her support during his tenure.
Nigel de Jong, the technical director for the Dutch football association (KNVB), described the World Cup campaign as disappointing. De Jong stated that the team’s objective was to reach the semi-finals, with an ambition to become world champions. He concluded that the team was “a long way off” achieving these goals.
Team Performance and Player Criticism
The Netherlands‘ early exit from the World Cup came after a 3-2 penalty shootout loss to Morocco, following a 1-1 draw after extra time. The Dutch media, including journalist Valentijn Driessen, criticised the team’s approach to the match, with Driessen calling their game plan a “great disgrace.”
Virgil van Dijk, captain of the Netherlands, faced significant criticism from Dutch media following the team’s performance. Despite the negative reception, Van Dijk told NOS that the team’s “gameplan worked,” citing their defensive solidity and Morocco’s difficulty in finding space between the lines. He noted that the team had trained extensively for their strategy, which involved dropping deep and waiting for pressing opportunities.
However, Van Dijk has been accused of “betraying national team” and has been told his “time is up” at the international level. Ronald De Boer, a Dutch icon, also suggested that Van Dijk may have played his last game for his country and advised Koeman to step down as manager. De Boer indicated that a “new fire” is needed within the Dutch team, starting with the coach, and anticipated that both Koeman and Van Dijk would make announcements regarding their futures soon.
Online Abuse and KNVB Response
Following the penalty shootout against Morocco, several Netherlands players who missed their penalties were subjected to racist abuse online. Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber, and Crysencio Summerville were among those who received discriminatory, racist, and hateful comments on social media after failing to score. The KNVB issued a statement condemning the abuse, calling it “appalling.”
The association confirmed that it would file a case with Meld Online Discriminatie (Report Online Discrimination). This action could lead to legal staff assessing whether the comments constitute a punishable offence, potentially resulting in a formal complaint to the public prosecution service and a criminal investigation. The KNVB emphasised that discrimination runs counter to the unifying spirit of football, which brings together diverse people.
This incident is not isolated, as players have previously faced similar online abuse after missing penalties in major tournaments. For instance, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, and Jadon Sancho experienced abuse after England‘s loss in the Euro 2020 final, which led to arrests and convictions for online hate speech.
