France manager Didier Deschamps has predicted a “spectacular” semi-final clash against Spain in Dallas on Tuesday. The match will determine which team advances to the World Cup 2026 final.
This encounter marks another significant meeting between the two European football powerhouses. Spain previously defeated France in the semi-finals of Euro 2024, where they were crowned European champions, and also overcame them in a Nations League last-four match last year.
Despite these past results, Deschamps, who is set to step down after the tournament, stated that “the past is in the past.” He added, “We are now at another level. We want to be in the final.” France aims to become only the third nation to reach three consecutive World Cup finals, a feat previously achieved by West Germany and Brazil.
Anticipation Builds for High-Stakes Match
Deschamps, who captained France to a world title in 1998 and managed them to victory in 2018, considers Spain to be the favourites for the semi-final. He noted Spain has conceded only one goal in six matches during the tournament. “We know this could be a most spectacular game,” Deschamps commented, acknowledging the offensive quality of both teams.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente, however, downplayed the favourite tag. He stated that it doesn’t add extra pressure, as the team already feels the need to perform well for their country. De la Fuente also referenced a quote from Julius Caesar, saying, “you can’t win without suffering,” indicating the demanding nature of the upcoming match.
France’s midfielder Warren Zaïre-Emery expressed his team’s desire for revenge following their Euro 2024 exit. He highlighted that France has a “different team” now and is ready to deliver a focused performance against Spain. Zaïre-Emery also spoke about the diverse backgrounds within the French squad, emphasising their unity.
Deschamps confirmed that Kylian Mbappé, who sustained an ankle knock in the quarter-final against Morocco, participated in training and is available for selection. There is also a possibility of Aurélien Tchouaméni returning to the starting lineup if deemed fit after a muscle injury, potentially replacing Manu Koné.
Tactical Approaches and Key Players
France has demonstrated strong attacking form in the tournament. Kylian Mbappé has been a key contributor, scoring eight goals and assisting three. Mbappé is currently tied with Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.
Spain’s approach is characterised by control and possession. Their style aims to starve opposition teams of the ball, maintaining an unmatched average possession share in the tournament. This patient build-up, while not always dazzling, serves a dual purpose: creating opportunities in the final third and bolstering their defensive record by limiting opponent possession.
The Spanish team’s ability to transition quickly and isolate defenders in one-on-one situations, particularly through players like Lamine Yamal, is expected to be crucial. The midfield battle is also anticipated to be a key area, with Spain’s central players like Rodri and Pedri setting the tone for their attacks.
Deschamps reiterated his belief that Spain are favourites, stating, “Forget about the first game against Cape Verde. Ever since then Spain have confirmed that they are the favourites.” He also clarified that while the past encounters with Spain were significant, the focus for France is solely on the World Cup semi-final.
The match is scheduled for Tuesday, with kick-off at 20:00 BST.
