Watford Football Club has sacked head coach Ed Still after just 83 days in charge, marking the third managerial departure this season. The decision comes following a disappointing run of form that saw the team finish 16th in the Championship.
Still’s record during his brief tenure included 3 wins, 4 draws, and 8 defeats across 15 matches. His last five league fixtures ended in losses, with the team conceding a staggering 16 goals while managing to score only once.
This managerial change continues a troubling trend for Watford, which has seen frequent coaching turnover under owner Gino Pozzo. Since Pozzo took control in 2012, the club has made an astonishing 23 permanent managerial appointments.
Watford has cycled through a total of 15 head coaches since September 2019. The instability reflects broader issues within the club, as they consistently struggle to find a lasting solution on the sidelines.
The official statement from Watford FC announced: “We wish them all the best in their future endeavours.” This sentiment was echoed by Chief Executive Scott Duxbury, who acknowledged that there were aspects that needed improvement moving forward.
Duxbury remarked, “We have to accept there were things we got wrong – and things that MUST improve over the close season.” He emphasized the need for reflection and rebuilding as they prepare for next season.
Ed Still himself expressed a desire for a reset: “The end of season is needed and there is plenty of time to reset, reshape and start again afresh from the summer.” His departure comes as no surprise given the team’s recent performances.
Looking ahead, Watford will begin their search for a new manager. This will mark their fifth appointment in just one year as they aim to stabilize their fortunes on and off the pitch.
