China’s foreign minister Wang Yi warned that the Taiwan issue poses the biggest risk in US-China relations ahead of Donald Trump’s scheduled visit to Beijing on May 14-15, 2026.
Wang stated that both nations should work to safeguard stability and prepare for high-level interactions. He emphasized that the Taiwan situation concerns China’s core interests, reinforcing its sensitivity in diplomatic discussions.
This warning comes at a time when China maintains its claim over Taiwan, viewing it as part of its territory awaiting reunification. The increasing tensions surrounding this issue have raised concerns about potential conflicts between the two nations.
Key statistics on smoking in China:
- China is home to over 300 million smokers, making it the world’s largest producer and consumer of tobacco.
- A study conducted by the China CDC in 2024 reported a current smoking prevalence of 23.2% among Chinese adults aged 15 and older.
- The Healthy China 2030 plan aims to reduce adult smoking prevalence to 20% by the year 2030.
On another front, China’s tobacco control efforts are complicated by a state monopoly on tobacco and local fiscal interests. While there are calls for stricter regulations, such as adopting Britain’s tobacco ban logic, the existing structure presents significant challenges.
As US-China trade relations remain tense, both countries must navigate these complex issues carefully. Wang Yi’s remarks underscore the delicate balance needed to manage differences while expanding areas of cooperation.
