“Urgent safety check for 85,000 tumble dryers” is the warning from the Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, as UK households scramble to buy traditional tumble dryers. This rush comes as the government prepares to enforce new energy efficiency regulations that will phase out less efficient models.
The upcoming regulations will only allow tumble dryers with an Energy Efficiency Index (EEI) of less than 85 to remain on the market. As a result, retailers have reported a significant spike in demand for these appliances as consumers seek to purchase them before they are banned.
In addition to the new regulations, safety concerns have arisen regarding Haier-manufactured tumble dryers. The Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service has urged residents to stop using affected units immediately due to a fire risk that impacts 85,000 machines.
Consumers might consider switching to heat pump dryers, which can save approximately £250 over a standard 12-year lifespan compared to traditional models. In contrast, an average condenser dryer costs about £129.56 annually to operate under the April 2026 energy price cap.
The government’s policy will not affect existing tumble dryers; it strictly prohibits the sale of new inefficient models. This means households can continue using their current appliances without concern.
This situation echoes similar trends in Northern Ireland, where spikes in demand for traditional tumble dryers were noted due to comparable restrictions under EU rules. Consumers appear motivated by both regulatory changes and safety alerts.
The Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service has emphasized the importance of consumer product safety, stating, “Stop using the appliance immediately and unplug it if possible.” This statement highlights the urgency surrounding the safety checks on Haier products.
As consumers navigate these changes, they face a dual challenge: ensuring they comply with new energy efficiency standards while also prioritizing safety in their homes. With the clock ticking on the availability of certain models, many are left weighing their options carefully.
