Dramatic Comeback in Jeddah
Anthony Joshua secured a dramatic victory against Kristian Prenga in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, recovering from two knockdowns in the first round to stop his opponent in the second. This fight marked Joshua’s return to the ring following a car crash in Nigeria in December that resulted in the deaths of his friends, Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele.
The British heavyweight was floored by a significant uppercut from Prenga early in the opening round, just 20 seconds into the bout. He was then knocked down again later in the same round, leading to concerns about the outcome of the fight and the potential impact on a long-anticipated match with Tyson Fury.

However, Joshua rallied in the second round, unleashing a series of right-hand punches. The final blow sent Prenga to the canvas, prompting the referee to halt the contest. This win marks Joshua’s 27th knockout victory of his career.
Emotional Return and Future Prospects
Joshua spoke emotionally after the fight, attributing his resilience to his friends. “It’s more than punch power. That was spirit, that was Latz, that was Sina, that was the families. It hurts to even talk about it. It has been tough,” he stated, visibly moved. He later added, “It’s my brothers. I don’t want to talk about it.”
The fight against Prenga was Joshua’s first against a recognised professional opponent since his match with Daniel Dubois. His only other recent fight was against Jake Paul in December, shortly before the fatal car crash.

Promoter Eddie Hearn expressed his relief and admiration for Joshua’s performance. Hearn admitted that he had concerns during the first round, fearing that Joshua might have returned to boxing too soon after the difficult period he had experienced. He highlighted Joshua’s strength in simply being able to compete.
Anticipation for Fury Showdown
The victory has paved the way for the highly anticipated clash between Joshua and Tyson Fury. Contracts for this fight have reportedly been signed, though the specific venue and date remain unconfirmed. There has been speculation about the location, with some suggesting a UK venue like Wembley Stadium, while others indicate a preference for a United States venue to appeal to American audiences, with the bout expected to stream on Netflix.
Fury, who had a warm-up win against Mariusz Wach in Thailand, was not present ringside in Jeddah. Joshua acknowledged Fury in his post-fight comments, stating, “I respect everything he has done and everything that he has achieved, but as a fighting person, we’re here now. I hope the fans will be in for a lovely treat.”
Prenga, who entered the fight with a record of 20 knockouts from 20 victories, experienced his second career loss. Joshua praised Prenga’s performance, suggesting that with more experience, Prenga could compete at a higher level.
The fight against Prenga was a crucial test for Joshua, who, according to Hearn, has been through an incredibly challenging seven months.

Despite the adversity, Joshua passed the test, setting the stage for his next major fight.
