LeBron James has offered his gratitude to the Los Angeles Lakers as he prepares for free agency, which is set to commence later today. The NBA club had previously extended its best wishes to James, acknowledging him as “one of the greatest athletes in history” as his departure approaches.
In response to the Lakers’ social media post, James stated, “No, THANK YOU! Truly an honor to wear the [Lakers colours] while trying to continue the greatness & legacies that came before me! Hope I made a few proud during my stint.” James spent eight seasons with the Lakers, during which he led the team to a championship in 2020.
His representative, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, has confirmed that James is not retiring. The question of where James will play next is a significant storyline as the NBA’s free agency period begins.

Jeanie Buss, part of the Lakers’ ownership group, expressed the team’s appreciation for James’s contributions. “LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes in history,” Buss said. “We will always be thankful for his eight years with the Lakers, including the title he led us to in 2020 under the toughest imaginable circumstances, and the countless records he broke in purple and gold.” She added that James “will always be a cherished part of the Lakers family.”
James joined the Lakers in 2018, marking his first time playing in the NBA’s Western Conference. Before his tenure with the Lakers, he had two separate periods with the Cleveland Cavaliers and four years with the Miami Heat. He was the first pick in the 2003 NBA Draft, selected by his hometown Cavaliers, where he played for seven seasons.
His move to Miami was announced during a live TV special, a decision that reportedly impacted his public image at the time. In Miami, James, alongside Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, secured two NBA titles during their four seasons together. He later returned to Cleveland, leading the team to a championship in 2016 by overcoming a series deficit against the Golden State Warriors.
Potential Future Moves and Records
Reports on Monday indicated that the Golden State Warriors are considering signing James, which could lead to a union with former rivals Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. James previously faced Curry and Green in the NBA finals for four consecutive seasons from 2015 to 2018 while with the Cavaliers. The Warriors are also reportedly looking into signing Anthony Davis.
Green has not exercised his option for the upcoming season, a move that provides his team with flexibility for roster adjustments. Green commented on his decision, stating, “Personally, I’m always willing to work with the team on whatever is best, especially at this point in my career. So my decision to opt out was for a few reasons. As you all know, I’ve always taken the approach of working with the organization. I’ve been in one place for 14 years. It’s more of a family to me than anything.” This flexibility could be a factor in James potentially moving to Golden State, given his close relationships with Green, Curry, and Warriors coach Steve Kerr.
James holds numerous NBA records, including most minutes played, most points scored, and most All-Star appearances. He earned his 22nd consecutive All-Star selection last February. The free agency negotiation window opens at 6pm ET on Tuesday, though players cannot officially sign with new teams until the league’s offseason moratorium is lifted on 6 July.
