Newcastle United has announced the appointment of Matthias Jaissle as the club’s new head coach. The 38-year-old German joins Newcastle following successful tenures at Red Bull Salzburg and Al-Ahli. Despite these achievements, Newcastle finished 12th last season, and key players such as Alexander Isak, Sandro Tonali, and Anthony Gordon departed within a year. Merih Demiral, a defender who played under Jaissle at Al-Ahli, noted his ability to maintain belief even when losing, which contributed to many comeback victories.
At Red Bull Salzburg, Jaissle achieved immediate success, winning a domestic double in his first season. He also guided the club to the UEFA Champions League knockout stages for the first time in their history in 2022, and secured a second consecutive league title. After moving to Al-Ahli, he transformed the team, securing qualification for the AFC Champions League in his first season and leading them to back-to-back AFC Champions League titles.
Jaissle primarily employs a high-pressing 4-4-2 formation when opponents build from the back. His teams are known for their ability to transition quickly into a high press. This tactical approach aligns with the principles established by his predecessor, Eddie Howe, which focused on physical intensity, pressing, and direct attacks. This continuity in principles could facilitate the players’ adaptation to Jaissle’s methods. His staff will work with a squad whose average age has significantly decreased this summer, though he will still rely on experienced players like Dan Burn and Fabian Schar.
Jaissle’s ability to adapt was evident at Al-Ahli, where he managed a diverse squad of superstars and less experienced Saudi players, a different challenge from his time at Red Bull Salzburg. His teams at Al-Ahli were known for their aggressive high press, quick forward play, and solid defensive foundations, conceding fewer goals than any other team in the Saudi Pro League last season. This balanced approach will be crucial for success in the Premier League.
