British wildcards Katie Swan and Arthur Fery are among the remaining home players at Wimbledon, following a strong performance by Novak Djokovic who advanced to the third round. Swan, a 27-year-old, became the first British player to reach the second round after a victory she described as the best of her career, overcoming previous injury troubles. She is now set to face Madison Keys, the 26th seed and a former Australian Open champion.
Fery, one of three wildcards in the men’s singles, is playing against Finnish qualifier Otto Virtanen, who previously defeated fifth seed Ben Shelton in the first round. Other British players in action include Jacob Fearnley and Jan Choinski, who are scheduled to play Jaume Munar and 17th seed Frances Tiafoe, respectively.
Djokovic’s Dominance and Tsitsipas’s Challenges
Djokovic secured a straight-sets victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 scoreline. This win marks his 12th consecutive match against the former world No 3. The match saw Djokovic deliver a strong performance, particularly with his serve, which allowed him to conserve energy. He finished the match with 33 winners and seven unforced errors.
Tsitsipas, who has faced Djokovic in two Grand Slam finals, is currently experiencing a challenging period in his career, with his ranking at 87, his lowest since January 2018. His game has been affected by weaknesses such as his one-handed backhand and return of serve, which Djokovic exploited during their match. Tsitsipas recently announced a split from his father, Apostolos, who had been his coach for most of his life.
Djokovic expressed his satisfaction with his performance, stating that he feels privileged to play on Centre Court at his age. He will next face 25th seed Arthur Rinderknech of France.
British Hopes and Injury Comebacks
Fery’s match against Virtanen has been closely contested. After losing the first set 5-7, Fery managed to level the match by winning the second set 7-6 (3). During the match, Fery was observed by the Princess of Wales, who was seated courtside with Tim Henman and Debbie Jevans, chair of the All England Club.
Swan’s return to the big stage follows a period of significant injury struggles. She had considered retirement after experiencing severe back pain and a career-threatening injury. By the end of 2024, she had started coaching at a tennis club in Kansas, where her parents reside. Following a recommendation from her coach, she sought alternative treatment in Arizona, where it was discovered that her nerves were not functioning properly. She spent approximately eight months recovering before being able to compete professionally again.
Despite being an underdog against Keys, Swan expressed her excitement about playing in the second round. She noted that Keys leads their head-to-head record 2-0, with their last encounter in Australia in January 2023, where Keys won the third set 6-4. Keys also enters Wimbledon with more grass court wins than any other player on the WTA circuit this season.
In other matches, reigning champion Iga Swiatek is playing against former finalist Karolina Pliskova, and Matteo Berrettini’s clash with Arthur Fils is also a featured match on Centre Court. Meanwhile, Naomi Osaka advanced to the third round after defeating Anastasia Gasanova in just 67 minutes.
Andreeva’s Exit and Djokovic’s Prank
Teenager Mirra Andreeva was eliminated from Wimbledon after losing 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 to two-time Grand Slam winner Barbora Krejcikova on Centre Court. Following her defeat, Andreeva launched her racket at the umpire’s chair in frustration. She later became emotional during her post-match press conference, acknowledging her mistakes and Krejcikova’s strong play.
During his second-round win, Djokovic engaged in a light-hearted moment with a ball girl. While she was assisting him with his shirt, he pretended she had accidentally stabbed him with scissors. The ball girl initially recoiled in horror before realizing it was a joke. Djokovic later apologised in a press conference, stating that the prank helped him relax.
