Ted, the beloved canine star of Mortimer and Whitehouse: Gone Fishing, has died at the age of 13, leaving a legacy of joy and companionship on the show. He first appeared in 2020 and quickly became a fan favorite for his playful antics alongside hosts Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse.
Ted was a patterdale terrier mix, rescued from a dog’s home in Surrey in 2013 when he was about six months old. His charm and personality endeared him to viewers as he often stuck his snout into the stars’ fishing bags while keeping them company on various British riverbanks.
In addition to his television fame, Ted amassed an impressive following on social media, boasting 282,000 followers on Instagram. His popularity led to the release of a book titled A Pawtobiography in 2024, which became a Sunday Times bestseller. Moreover, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award during the Christmas special in Cornwall in 2025.
Ted was cherished not only by fans but also by those who worked closely with him. Lisa Clark, the executive producer of Gone Fishing, remarked, “Ted was a much-loved family pet as well as a treasured companion to Paul and Bob on Gone Fishing.” His final appearance will be featured in the forthcoming ninth series of the show.
Reactions from Mortimer and Whitehouse illustrate their deep affection for Ted. Bob Mortimer expressed his sadness by saying, “So very, very sad. Lovely Ted, the best companion and the greatest little chum. Going to miss him so much .. and away boss.” Paul Whitehouse added poignantly, “Bye bye Ted, old friend. He wasn’t a dog; he was a species all of his own. He’s gone to the great briefcase emporium in the sky. We will really miss you mate.”
