Virgin Media O2’s commitment to renewable energy is highlighted by its new ten-year power purchase agreement for the 49.9MW Grange Solar Farm in Suffolk. This initiative aims to significantly enhance the company’s energy supply, with the solar plant expected to be operational by 2027 and providing around 5% of Virgin Media O2’s total energy needs.
Local initiatives:
- Ilkley Lawn Tennis and Squash Club installed solar panels in March 2026, anticipating annual electricity savings of approximately £20,000.
- Ilkley Cricket Club plans to replace their diesel-powered wicket maintenance machine with a solar roller.
- The total energy generated from local solar installations is around 240,000 kWh each year, equating to potential savings of £60,000 if purchased from conventional energy providers.
Gavin Sutcliffe, General Manager of Ilkley Lawn Tennis and Squash Club, emphasized the dual motivation for adopting solar technology: “We wanted to get our solar panels in place for two reasons – environmental and economic.” This sentiment echoes a broader trend among local organizations aiming to reduce their carbon footprint.
Meanwhile, the emissions avoided by local solar generation are equivalent to taking 22 family diesel cars off the road. The shift towards sustainable practices is gaining momentum across various sectors as communities recognize the benefits of clean energy.
On another front, a recent study published in Nature Communications reveals an innovative form of bismuth vanadate (β-BiVO4) that can efficiently absorb sunlight for hydrogen fuel production. This development could further enhance the potential applications of solar technology beyond traditional electricity generation.
